Itasca Iron News April 27, 1944 Two Calumet Boys Met in Mid-Ocean This story comes to the Iron News from a letter written by Sammy Evanoff, son of Mr & Mrs Sam Evanoff of Calumet, who met a pal from his home town in Calumet “in the middle of the Pacific “. “We had been transferred to another ship in the middle of the pacific. I was on board and stood watching some fellows from another ship getting on our boat, when who should I see but Wallace Garlough. I waited util he was along side of me and then said, Hi Wally! Well, for a moment he was speechless. We had some good times together and he told me all about the latest news from home. We crossed the international date line and I’ll never forget that morning. Will tell you about it sometime.
“Wally and I were together as far as New Caledonia (I’ll put in but the censor may not like it and blot it out.) and then Wally was on a different boat and went on—where? I wouldn’t know”.
Sammy Evanoff is in the US Navy in submarine service. Wallace Garlough of Calumet and is the Medical Corps of the US Navy. The Garlough’s had not heard from him for seven weeks and were glad to read the letter from Evanoff and learn indirectly of their son.
Both Evanoff and Garlough are graduates of Greenway high school in Coleraine.
