James served in Europe, Asia, and North Africa during World War II.

James attended schools in Danbury and Webster, Wisconsin.
He worked in aviation training, as a crop duster, charter pilot and flight instructor for flight and ground school at Chaffey College in Alta Loma, California, and for General Dynamics, retiring in 1971.
He lived in Grantsburg, Wisconsin for 20 years prior to moving to Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Preceded in death by a son, Hugh, in 1968, he is survived by three daughters, Maureen Andrews, Mariann Miller and Candice Monroe; four sons, Jimmy, Stephen, Walter, and Irwin; one brother, Howard "Babe" Frizzell; one sister, Darla "Gladys" Smiley; sixteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
James died at his home and is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot I-G-15-0-8)
