Jim joined the Army on July 17, 1942. He separated from the Army at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin on October 27, 1945. While serving, he participated in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He re-enlisted on February 4, 1948 and separated from the Army at Fort Lewis, Washington on January 24, 1950.

Jim grew up and attended school in Evergreen Township. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and then joined the Army in 1942.
Jim was united in marriage to Violet Mindermann on September 3, 1946 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, Minnesota.
In 1950, they moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota where he worked road construction, logging, and in the iron ore mines.
Preceding him in death were his wife on May 2, 2001; his parents; and two sisters, Edna and Isabelle.
He is survived by six sons, Roger, Donald, James, Jr., Gary, Marvin, and Wayne; a daughter, Donna; six brothers, Ralph, George, David, Bob, Don, and Ernie; two sisters, Olive Erkkila and Betty Lous Paulabicki; seventeen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; and one step grandson.
Jim died in Cohasset, Minnesota and is buried in Pickett Cemetery at Frazee, Minnesota. There is no photo of the grave marker.
