Served with the 802nd Aviation Engineers Battalion in the United States Army at Okinawa during World War II.

Following his discharge, he returned to farming until 1959 when he went to work in marketing with Minneapolis-Moline. He then worked 26 1/2 years for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota retiring in 1986.
He married Cecilia A. Hanratty on October 13, 1951, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lived in Medelia, Minnesota until moving to the St. Cloud, Minnesota area for five years. He then lived in Sartell, Minnesota for eleven years, White Bear Lake, Minnesota for three years, Sioux City, Iowa for three years and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1996.
He has been a resident at the Marina Center in St. Paul, Minnesota for 17 months prior to moving to the Greensview Health Care Center in Bagley, Minnesota in October, 1998.
Elmer was a member of the American Legion, The Holy Name Society, Itasca Pilots Association, the St. Cloud Lions Club and Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; a son, James (Cynthia); four daughters, Mary McLean, Kathy McLean, Pat Malone, and Nancy (Dr. Mike) Guimaraes; and eleven grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Archie and Donald; and two sisters, Evelyn Bishop and Leone McLean.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 3.6.4.2)
