After school, Steven enlisted in the United States Navy and served for six years, from February, 1986 to February, 1992. Steven served on the USS Spadefish SSN 668, which was a fast-attack nuclear submarine.

Steven grew up and attended school in the LaPorte, Minnesota area.
After graduating from Greenway High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After military service, Steven toured Australia and New Zealand.
When he returned, he married and settled in the Walker, Minnesota area.
He was a member of the Hackensack American Legion of Hackensack, Minnesota, the Akeley Veterans of Foreign Wars of Akeley, Minnesota, the National Rifle Association and the Bemidji Race Association of Bemidji, Minnesota.
Preceded in death by his sister, Julie Waldow Foster, surviving relatives include his wife, Dori; children Lee and Rani; his parents, Marlene and Dwayne Foster and Jerome Waldow; sisters Sherri Hane and Darcie Foster; and a brother, Patrick.
Steven died in Dakota Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota and is buried in Lakeport Cemetery at LaPorte, Minnesota. (Block 46, Lot 2)
