Lucy entered the United States Navy WAVES in 1943 and served during World War II. Lucy was stationed in Washington, D.C and was discharged in March, 1946.
Newspaper article: Deer River News, Deer River, Minnesota - November 4, 1943: "Lucille Gertrude Yost of Deer River, Minnesota was sworn in as a WAVE in the United States Navy at the Naval Procurement Office in Minneapolis and is now a member of a great fighting service, according to a report from the Minneapolis office. She will wear the same Navy blue, win the same ratings and earn the same pay as America's finest fighting men. WAVE Yost will receive four weeks of recruit training at government expense at Hunter College in New York. At the end of which time she may be ordered to active duty at once or transferred for further instruction at a Naval Station - wherever she will be needed most. Miss Yost attended Hill City and Deer River high schools."

Lucy moved to Days High Landing near Ball Club, Minnesota from Mitchell, South Dakota with her family at age seven.
After graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Minnesota State Forestry Office.
Lucy married Timothy Thomas DeWitt on October 12, 1946. They lived in Deer River, Minnesota for 39 years.
Lucy was a member of the VFW Post #2720 in Deer River, Minnesota.
Survivors are her husband, Timothy, Sr.; two sons, Timothy, Jr. and Scott; a daughter, Susan DeWitt; six sisters, Viola (Ben) Patterson, Irene (Donald) Simons, Leona (David) Radke, Dorothy (George) Telfer, Luella (Dave) Rasley, and Lorraine (Lloyd) Pickard; five brothers, Raymond, Charles, Edward, Gerald, and Robert; and a grandson.
Lucy died at Community Memorial Hospital in Deer River, Minnesota and is buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery at Deer River, Minnesota.
