Russ joined the United States Army on November 10, 1965, and served in Vietnam.
Russ was an expert rifleman (M-14) and he drove the munitions truck during the Vietnam Conflict.

Russ grew up in Pengilly, Minnesota and received his GED on December 11, 1986.
He met his wife, Flora Blumer, in Yankton, South Dakota where he worked construction. They were married on September 22, 1972.
The family then moved to Bovey, Minnesota.
Russ had been self-employed for the past twenty years with E-K Builders, doing carpentry work for people in the surrounding area. Russ had many hobbies including building wooden toys for children, gardening with his wife, and building miniature homes.
Survivors include his wife, Flora May Eckstrom; children, Terry (Sharon), Lance (Marie) and Vance (Linda); Lisa, Perry (Becky), Daniella, Rusty, Scott (Teresa), and Diane; thirty-one grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his mother, Doreen Eckstrom; brothers, Larry, John and Bob; and a sister, Loni.
His father, Charles Roy Eckstrom, a brother, Chuck, and a grandson, Cody Koppelmann preceded him in death.
Russl died in his home and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery at Coleraine, Minnesota. (Block 138)
