Hospitalized in Japan for a month, he called his mother long distance Saturday morning. The connection was clear, and every word was distinct, Mrs. Mood says. It was 1 a.m. Saturday in Grand Rapids and 4 p.m. Saturday where the soldier made his call.
After attending schools in Grand Rapids, Wittstruck enlisted in the Army last June. He received infantry training and was shipped late in February to Korea where he has been in action.
