National Guardsmen at Fort Hood, Texas
Five Grand Rapids and Aitkin National Guardsmen recently returned from Fort Hood, Texas, where they attended a two-week school on the operation and maintenance of ground surveillance radar sets.
Attending the school were Captain Sidney R. Moore, Staff Sergeant Roy A. Berg, Staff Sergeant Alvin M. Young, Corporal Larry G. Mattfield, and Specialist 4 Robert R. Duncan.
The Grand Rapids Guard unit will soon be receiving radar sets which are light enough to be backpacked in rough terrain and can be set up to operate in a matter of minutes.
The men received training on two types of sets, one capable of detecting targets up to 18,000 meters away. The sets can detect a man walking and distinguish different types of vehicles.
