Newspaper article: August 1945 – “Three Coleraine boys are receiving their initial Naval indoctrination at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. Their recruit training consists of instruction in seamanship, military drill, and general Naval procedure. During this period a series of aptitude tests will be taken by the recruits to determine whether they will be assigned to a Naval Service School, to a shore station, or to immediate duty at sea. When their recruit training is completed, these men will receive a period of leave. They are: Barry M. Rowles, 18, son of Dr. and Mrs. Everett K. Rowles; Robert L. Mester, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis D. Mester, and Gerald H. Gillman, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Burton S. Gillman.”
Newspaper article: December 1945 – From Bob Mester, Norman, Okla.: “Dear Friends: I’m very sorry I haven’t written sooner and thanked you for the Christmas box. Thank you very much for the box. I enjoyed it very much. The one thing I miss is the snow. It’s awfully cold down here, but no snow. I hope I’m home for Christmas, just to see the snow. Well, I guess there’s nothing to say about Oklahoma. I hope to be shipping out in January. Thanks again for the Christmas box, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. As ever, Bob Mester.”
