Robert joined the United States Navy at 17 and served in Guam before the close of the war. He had been in the Navy a year and a half when he was released. A year later he enlisted in the United States Army for a three-year term. He had served a little more than a year.

Robert's family came to Itasca County about 1929 and lived near Deer River, Minnesota for about five years. They then established a home in the City of Deer River. Robert's parents came to Grand Rapids, Minnesota around 1948.
Robert died of injuries received in a motorcycle accident the evening of August 8, 1949, near Elsinore, California. He is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot I-B-04-2-6)
